Trent Alexander-Arnold, Luis Diaz, Fabinho, Darwin Núñez, Mohamed Salah, and Virgil van Dijk are the Reds who were named among the finalist for the trophy, which will be awarded in Paris on October 17th. Since the 2022 Ballon d’Or will be awarded in the middle of the season for most European clubs, voters (media members, coaches, and national team captains) will base their decision on players’ performances from last season.
The current holder of the Ballon d’Or is Argentina’s Lionel Messi, who has won the trophy seven times. Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo holds the record for the most nominations with 18, including this year.

Karim Benzema is heavy favourite to claim the men’s Ballon d’Or after winning the Champions League and La Liga with Real Madrid last season. If so, it would be his first award, and he would succeed Lionel Messi, who won the award for a record seventh time last year.
