Manchester United 2-1 Liverpool

Liverpool’s poor start to the season continued with the Reds suffering a 2-1 loss to rivals Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Jurgen Klopp’s team sheet was questioned at the beginning of the game when Fabinho was left on the bench with Jordan Henderson partnering James Milner and Harvey Elliott in midfield.

Manchester United came into Monday’s match desperate for a win and that desperation showed from the opening whistle. While Liverpool supporters expected a comfortable win against their rivals.

Defensively Liverpool we’re poor and tired and disorganised. Jadon Sancho scored the opening goal with a composed finish to set United on their way to a first win under Erik ten Hag. While Marcus Rashford punished more slack Liverpool defending, slotting home one on one with Alisson.

Manager Jürgen Klopp was disappointed with the loss but insisted there are no deeper internal issues within the squad.

Klopp said “We don’t have any kind of issues. I have not had any kind of issues in the team like this, nobody is happy after you lose a game is completely normal, but this is not an explanation, not an excuse or whatever. It’s all fine there, in this department.”

Our Egyptian King continues to show why he is one of the best footballers in the world. His 81st-minute marker proved to be one for the record books as he has passed the legendary captain Steven Gerrard for the most career goals vs United with 10. The goal also vaults Salah past Michael Owen to 8th place on Liverpool‘s all time scoring list with 159.

Although a disappointing and bitter pill to swallow against the Manc’s. Liverpool we’re poor and so off the mark for the majority of the game. Manchester United we’re certainly up for it, showing the fight and determination lacking in previous games. The home crown were especially buoyant on the back of signing Casemiro. A below par performance, depleted Liverpool squad with several key players missing and not enough strength in depth on the bench, result in Liverpool losing for the first time in 2022. Alarm bells should be ringing. Surely we have to get a quality midfielder in before the transfer window closes?

This leaves Liverpool lying 16th in the table, without a win from their first three Premier League games. A really poor start. Questions will be asked in the coming days surrounding whether Liverpool will sign an additional midfielder and bolster up the squad.

Liverpool face Bournemouth next on Saturday at 3PM at Anfield – in what feels like almost a must-win game already this early on.
