LIVERPOOL 3-1 MANCHESTER CITY

Liverpool have won the 2022 Community Shield

The Reds claimed the first silverware of the season on Saturday. Jurgen Klopp’s side beat Manchester City 3-1 at the King Power Stadium to make a statement ahead of the new Premier League campaign.

Trent Alexander-Arnold scored in the 21st minute for the Reds which capped off the early push by Jürgen Klopp’s side. The goal was set up by Mo Salah, whom was electric.

One of City’s new signing’s did make his mark in the second half – the £14m former River Plate forward Julian Alvarez climbing off the bench to cancel out Trent Alexander-Arnold’s opener

Nunez then came off the bench in the 59th minute with the score at 1-1 and his aerial presence won the late penalty from which Mohamed Salah put Liverpool in front for a second time.

The former Benfica striker, having earlier been denied a goal by City goalkeeper Ederson was not finished and stooped to head home his first for the Reds in domestic competition in added time.

In previous years, the Community Shield has probably been looked at as something of a glorified pre-season friendly. However, it was absolutely clear just how much each side wanted to win in Leicester.

The icing on the cake came for the Reds when Darwin Nunez made the victory safe late on. The striker joined Mo Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold in getting on the scoresheet for Liverpool.

It certainly appears that the Reds have the means to bounce back from losing Mane to Bayern.

According to reports in Germany. Former Red Sadio Mane watched as much of Liverpool’s Community Shield win on Saturday as possible before helping Bayern Munich win the German Super Cup.
